Tina’s bridal shoot could not have been more relaxed. Her calm spirit and comfortable, natural poses made the entire experience go by so quickly. I could have photographed her for hours. Her shoot took place at the Harmon House in Kernersville and it was the perfect place to shoot with plenty of texture, colors, and flowers.

I think she may be interested in trashing her dress a little later. *Finger’s crossed*

If so, you’ll be seeing more of her, along with a few favs from their wedding. We can’t wait!!

Stephanie and Jimmy are absolutely one of the most adorable couples ever. We met them in Stephanie’s hometown of Fayetteville for their E-session and had the most fun trekking through downtown with them. We did a lot of our shooting with them near Hay Street and I have to give some serious props to Stephanie for scouting out some perfect places for shooting. Mike couldn’t believe how much the area has been beautified since his time with the 82nd Airborne back in the day.

We are really looking forward to shooting their wedding in June at the Smoky Mountain Mansion!

This was truly a fun photo session. I’ve written before about how much I love photographing related pairs in a previous post. There is so much going on in shoots of this sort where people interact with one another. When the pairs are related, I focus (forgive the pun) on trying to reveal the tenderness, joy and trust between the two of them. These just a few of my personal favorites from this mother and son’s photo session.

We are bikers (a couple of photos below to illustrate). And since the weather is warming and more and more bikers are getting their iron out on the road, and since I get all creatively hyped up at the thought of going outdoors to shoot cool bikes and hot biker people, we thought it might be a good time to offer a special on motorcycle portraits. So we’re giving a $25 discount off the standard booking fee through the month of April for any photos taken with a motorcycle (see our Facebook banner for samples from a previous shoot).

Now let me define “motorcycle.”

For purposes of our special offer, a motorcycle is defined as anything on two wheels with an engine of 49 cc or larger. Three-wheeled vehicles of 49 cc or larger are also included if the two wheels are in the back.

I make the 49 cc cutoff on engine size because mopeds and scooters aren’t motorcycles, and because Wikipedia says most jurisdictions cut it off at 49 cc (hey, I’m writing a blog not a doctoral dissertation, so Wikipedia will do just fine here). I include three wheels because trikes are a badass tradition in the biker world. But I say the two wheels must be in the back for one specific purpose – to exclude anyone who rides a Can-Am Spyder Roadster. Can-Am Spyder Roadsters are out because of their television commercial.

Note, I write “television commercial.” I’ve never ridden a Can-Am Spyder Roadster and cannot comment on its mechanical quality. I can only comment on the commercial, which ticks me off because it tries to associate one thing (Can-Am Spyder Roadsters and the people who ride them) with something their representatives in the commercial clearly aren’t (bikes and bikers). In other words, the commercial BS’s me and I don’t like to be BS’d.

The Can-Am ad piles it on by depicting a “gang” of cleanly dressed, nicely coiffed executive types and their lady friends cruising along a highway. They stop here and there to do some kind of balance beam act on a wooden fence, grab a bite to eat and quaff down a pony pitcher of what appears to be lemonade. Now, this in itself is fine. I have no problem at all with stubble free grown-ups in crisply pressed denims and kevlar jackets sharing the oxygen real people need to survive. For the moment, there seems to be plenty of oxygen to go around.

What I take issue with is the commercial’s attempt to associate these people with bikers. It does so by showing a “real” biker (a big, goateed, leather-clad monster of a man) nodding approvingly at these three-wheeled things in a parking lot. Then it really crosses the line by showing the metro gang pass a group of two-wheelers on the highway and one of the Can-Amers has the audacity to drop his hand in the traditional and top secret two-fingered biker wave.

This absolutely drives me over the deep end because these people, these Can-Am people, don’t look or act anything like bikers. You’re not a biker just because you know the top secret wave. Bikers are gritty and crude. They wear cracked leather and ragged jeans. They have fun with things like burn-outs and mud wrestling. They love the flag and hate authority. They push the edge of everything they do.

Can-Am people don’t push the edge. They pull it back with their straight-laced, safe style, and with a vehicle you can’t drop on your leg no matter how drunk you get off lemonade.

And they say in their commercial that the Can-Am Spyder Roadster is riding “reinvented.” B.S. Riding ain’t broken. It doesn’t need to be “reinvented.” That’s why something like the old Harley-Davidson “We Believe” promo appeals much more to me.

We’re Frayed Edge. We want to photograph people out there on it. So, for April, bikers get a $25 discount.

Can-Am riders pay full price.

The Frayed Edge layout is from one of our favorite weddings between two of our favorite people – Megan and Topper - who tied the knot on top of a mountain in southwest Virginia. It’s always rather rewarding to get a little recognition, even if what we did to get it was as much play as it was work. And what better keepsake for a bride than to have her wedding showcased in a magazine?

Hold on to your copies, Megan. Your grandkids will love to see them one day.

Zoe’s 2012 Calendar Shoot-Greensboro Portrait Photographer-Pet Photography

Zoe’s “mom”, Del (aka Glitt-R-Done) from Greensboro Roller Derby, hired Frayed Edge before the holidays to get some shots for a calendar she was putting together for her family. We didn’t want to take the risk of blowing her surprise, so we didn’t share these earlier. Zoe was such a ham in front of the camera. I gave her a while to warm up to me and get used to the camera before we began her session. Once she was comfortable, she really rocked it out. The goal of the shoot was to get her hanging out around her house and posing in different costumes related to each month. Usually it is Del in the spotlight, since she’s a roller girl, but Zoe seemed to really enjoy having this spotlight to herself. Check out this cute little diva below. These were just a few of my personal favorites.

Lisa is a local hair stylist, single mom, and roller derby diva. This woman can do it all. I met her last year while participating in the 2011 Fresh Meat class with Greensboro Roller Derby. Her oldest daughter was a part of our Fresh Meat Class as well. In the year I have known Lisa, I have learned so much from her and what it means to be true to one’s spirit and REAL. She is tough. I mean tough. She hits hard on the flat track and pulls no punches when it comes to her family. She is 110% committed to her children and the bond she shares with them shows through in their portrait session. This family was a blast to photograph and Frayed Edge loves their style!

Greensboro Portrait Photographer-H Family Portrait Session

Recent freezing temps did not stop these rock stars from getting some incredible early morning shots for their family portrait session. Lori and her children seemed game for anything and we took full advantage of their laid back attitudes by romping through wet, thorny terrain to reach some cool shooting spots. I even found myself crawling onto a precariously large pile of sticks and tree branches to capture a couple of cool images of Lori and Brea.

It’s such a high to walk away from a portrait session feeling amped from the energy of other people. We were so impressed with the close bond this mother shares with her children! Lori and her family exude such warmth and enthusiasm for life, I wasn’t even bothered by the cold. Thanks to the H-Family for being great sports and rocking this session!
